U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday began a 100-day online and radio campaign aimed at bolstering public support for nuclear disarmament (see GSN, June 11).
The campaign, dubbed "WMD-WeMustDisarm," is set to send out daily messages about the risks and costs of nuclear armaments ahead of International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, Ban said in a statement. Ban and celebrity supporters plan to use e-mail and the social networking platforms Twitter, Facebook and MySpace to spread the word.
"As we observe the International Day of Peace with world leaders gathered in New York for the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly, I will proclaim one strong, simple message: We Must Disarm!" Ban stated in a press release.
“WeMustDisarm because nukes threaten mankind. Let’s get rid of them 4 good,” the secretary general added in his inaugural Twitter message (U.N. release, June 13).
