Colorado City Joins Global Anti-Nuke Group

A Colorado city on Tuesday joined an international organization that hopes to see the global stockpile of nuclear weapons eliminated by 2020, the Boulder Daily Camera reported (see GSN, Nov. 10).

The Boulder City Council unanimously decided to join Mayors for Peace. The organization was formed in 1982 by the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It has 3,200 member cities spread across 134 nations and regions.

"We believe that peace does begin at the local level," said Boulder resident Bill Marine, who pushed for the passage of the measure.

Boulder became the second city to sign on with the organization in the state. Denver was the first.

"These weapons of mass destruction are pointed at cities," City Councilman Macon Cowles said. "I think this is such a clear-cut issue" (Heath Urie, Boulder Daily Camera, Nov. 17).
